Celebrate or Protest Waitangi day online

With Waitangi day this Saturday I can only assume we will see the same faces protesting at the various celebratory functions dominating our news sources.

I think that most New Zealanders only see it as a Public holiday and a day not to watch the first half of the news as it is the same each year.

For others it is a day of celebration and partnerships, maybe a time to learn about the historical grievances that our country face.

This year sets a new precedent for the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag to be flown by the New Zealand government on New Zealand’s national day, Waitangi Day on Auckland Harbour Bridge, Premier House, Parliament and other significant sites controlled by the Government. This John Keys says will recognise the partnership the Crown and Māori entered into when signing the Treaty of Waitangi”

Today I received an invite to a FaceBook group to protest Waitangi Day by changing your profile picture to the Tino Rangatiratanga flag.

I would like to think that we can all change our profile picture for one day to either celebrate or to protest the fact that it is Waitangi day the same way our government has committed to.
