Te Kete o Karaitiana Taiuru (Blog)

Word list of te reo Moriori

This is not an academic or linguist publication, but a compilation of several historically published sources that contain word lists of Moriori.

For full details including sources and an analysis download the publication here.

My intention as a researcher was to compile and publish this material which is scattered among many historical publications that are not easily accessible or are even common knowledge to many outside of academia.

I chose not to include genealogy of the myriad god names, but to only include a few more popular names as these are in stories that can be verbally shared as opposed to being made public in this publication. There was also a small list of god names whose association are unknown which I have included.

It is only fair that any Moriori descendant should be able to access their own language and sources so as to utilise the unique words and grammar of their own mother tongue. Even more so now that tribal dialects are being revived and promoted within iwi.

Hello and thank you for your list of vocabulary above.
We are learning about Moriori history.
1.Please may we find out how to greet? Is it “Kia ora?”
We see that there are many words in common with te reo Maori: ika, ahi, marama, etc. And the numbers are similar too. We read about Rekohu and the Moriori.
    2. Is there a word for “special places” that children from Kaingaroa School shared in the article in our School Journal Part 2 Number 2, 2010?
    Tau atu ra

Kia ora is often rendered as “tēnā kō”, “tēnā korua” or “tēnā kōtau” when addressing one, two or three or more people respectively. Written communications are often signed off as “me rongo”.

Sacred places are known as “wāhi tchap’” (wāhi tapu in Te Reo Māori).

Funny to see the tch sounds which would never be found in Maori
